Step-by-step guide:

Fix your leaky shower tray — step by step

This guide covers all steps to seal your leaky shower tray: preparation, sanding, priming, coating — with practical tips & tricks for durable protection.

Step 0: Check tray suitability

Most trays are PVC or ABS and work fine. Rare plastics (e.g., PST) should be tested for load/adhesion first.

Some geometries are hard to reach with a roller/brush and are better sprayed. Check the shape beforehand.

Example of a tray suitable for rolling/brush:

Consult our application technician if unsure to avoid simple mistakes.

Step 1: Masking

Masking is simpler for rolling/brush than for spraying.

Masking the edges

First apply a 20 mm tape parallel to the rim, then cover the area to the rim with 30 mm tape. This master tape is removed after coating. Protect other areas with paper/foil. Don’t forget to plug/tape the drain.

Step 2: Sand the tray

Clean and sand thoroughly with 80-grit paper/sponge. Also sand the edges — do not damage the master tape.

Sanding the surface

Repair broken areas with a plastic stapler if needed, seal cracks with PU sealant, and underpin soft floors with foam. More info: repair cracked shower tray.

Step 3: Clean & prime

Vacuum dust. Remove grease/wax with PLC cleaner or brake cleaner.

Cleaning the tray

Apply PP100 plastic primer thinly and evenly with a brush to floor, sides and edges.

Primer is grey in the tutorial for visibility — in practice it’s clear.

Applying primer

Let the primer dry 20–30 minutes (max. 2 hours). After 2 hours, re-apply.

Observe drying time

Step 4: Mix coating material

For an average tray, the SPEEDLINER PRO 1-bottle set is sufficient.

Measure material

Mix about 250 ml by volume in a mixing cup.

See the SPEEDLINER PRO processing guidelines for component A/B and pigment ratios.

Stir thoroughly

Step 5: Apply coating

Brush 50 mm along edges/corners, floor drain and hard-to-reach areas first.

Pre-coat edges and corners

Then roll the rest: floor ~1.5 mm, sides ~1 mm. For thicker build, add 2nd/3rd passes.

Step 6: Short drying time

Intermediate flash-off

After rolling, take a ~20-minute break.

Step 7: Apply texture

Texture defines look and slip resistance. Mix ~150 ml for texturing.

Prepare texture

“Standard” roller gives light texture; “Texture roller” gives a stronger pattern.

Step 8: Break

Let material set

Let it set for ~20 minutes.

Step 9: Apply Topcoat (optional)

White coatings aren’t UV-stable and may yellow. A Topcoat prevents this (recommended for tones lighter than light grey).

Apply Topcoat over SPEEDLINER PRO after ~45 min to 24 h without extra primer (we recommend ≥ 12 h). Rolls/brushes very well.

Drying: tack-free ~2 h, dry ~12 h at 25 °C/50% RH; serviceable in ~48–72 h; full properties after ~3 weeks.

Step 10: Remove master tape

Peel the master tape off carefully at a 45° angle.

Step 11: Demask

Let the coating dry at least 12 hours, protect from water/moisture. Strength increases as it cures and bonds permanently to the tray.

After 12 hours, remove foil, paper and remaining tape.

All done!
